7X7: 14 Nights of Light Over San Francisco

Cause campaignTikTokInstagramYouTubeFacebookLinkedInTwitch

The brief

This is a cause campaign — volunteer-driven and unpaid. 7X7 is a free gift to San Francisco, and this is an invitation to help share it, not a paid partnership. No fee, no contract, no obligation. Illuminate runs no paid promotion and sells no sponsorships. We're inviting you to experience 7X7 and share it only if it moves you.

The one-liner

This summer, San Francisco raises 7X7 — a monumental, immersive laser artwork over Civic Center Plaza, free to all, for the most remarkable two weeks in the city's recent history.

What it is

Forty-nine laser "space cannons" arranged in a 7×7 grid atop a freestanding truss structure — roughly a 49-foot square, about 10 feet overhead — in Civic Center Plaza, framing City Hall. You don't watch it from a distance; you walk in underneath and stand inside it as 49 columns of coherent light rise straight into the night, visible across the Bay Area. The name honors San Francisco's "seven-by-seven-mile" geography and its 49er spirit.

When — 14 nights, sunset to sunrise, June 21 – July 4, 2026

The beams are color-coordinated to each occasion across the run:

  • June 21 — Summer Solstice (opening night)
  • June 22 & 25 — FIFA World Cup matches (Bay Area)
  • June 26–28 — Pride Weekend (rainbow)
  • June 29 — San Francisco's 250th birthday, on a full-moon Monday night
  • July 1 — FIFA World Cup Round of 32
  • July 4 — America's 250th birthday (red, white & blue)

Why it matters

It's a free gift to the city — no tickets, no fences, no admission. San Francisco is the only city in the world exploring this monumental light form, and the city's famous fog is the unpredictable collaborator that makes every single night look different. No one knows exactly what it will look like — that's part of the magic.

Who's behind it

Illuminate, the nonprofit behind The Bay Lights, the Golden Mile on the JFK Promenade, and the Golden Gate Bandshell.

The reach

Hundreds of thousands will experience it in person; with the World Cup bringing the world to the Bay Area, millions more will see it globally online.

Why we're inviting you

Because you love this city, or you know awe when you see it. This is a once-in-a-lifetime convergence — solstice, Pride, two civic 250th birthdays, a full-moon Monday, the world in town — and you get to be among the first eyes on something no one has ever seen. Come be there for it.

The ask

Come experience 7X7. Capture it however you like — by day as sculpture, by night as light — and share it if it moves you. That's it.

  • No required posts, no approval process, no exclusivity.
  • Full creative freedom — it's your eye, your voice.
  • Share because you want to, not because you have to.

What we provide — and what we don't

We provide: media access and credentials on request, guidance on the best vantage points and times, an optional press and asset kit, suggested tags and hashtags, and — most of all — the experience itself.

We don't: pay a fee or run this as a sponsored partnership. This is a cause campaign. The reward is being part of the gift, and being early to a genuinely once-in-a-lifetime moment for San Francisco.
