The brief

Campaign Premise: To cast the world's longest Pride flag rainbow straight down the spine of Market Street using a massive array of high-powered lasers—playfully and affectionately dubbed "Gayzers."

Objective: To create a visually breathtaking, city-wide symbol of joy that honors the 50th anniversary of Pride. More than a light show, this is a profound San Francisco expression of freedom, demonstrating to the world how people can live fully and authentically as themselves.

This activation feeds directly into Illuminate’s core mission of transforming public spaces through monumental art, rallying communities, and further establishing San Francisco as the ultimate "City of Awe."

The Philosophy: A Rainbow for All of Humanity

  • The Message: Gilbert Baker famously stated that the rainbow flag wasn't just for one specific cause, group, or gender—it represents the entire "rainbow of humanity." "Gayzers" amplifies this universal truth. It is an invitation to everyone, regardless of who they are or where they come from, to step into the light.
  • Becoming the Art: The power of this installation lies in its scale. When you stand on Market Street under a multi-mile canopy of laser light, you are forced to surrender to the sheer awe and essence of the moment. You are no longer just looking at a symbol; by being bathed in those colors, you actively become part of the message.

The Legacy & The Future (The Road to 2028)

  • Honoring Gilbert Baker: San Francisco is the birthplace of the Pride flag, created here in 1978. "Gayzers" serves as a towering, city-scale homage to Baker's vision of a globally recognized symbol of liberation and love.
  • Planting the Flag for 2028: While we celebrate today, this installation acts as a monumental teaser. With the physical Pride flag turning 50 in 2028, "Gayzers" plants the flag early, kicking off a multi-year runway of anticipation and establishing San Francisco as the undisputed global epicenter for the upcoming 2028 golden anniversary.

The Path of Light

The trajectory of "Gayzers" is intentionally mapped to highlight San Francisco's history:

  • The Anchor: Originating at Embarcadero Plaza in front of Marco Cochrane's R-Evolution sculpture—a powerful testament to humanity, vulnerability, and strength.
  • The Command Center: The Awemobil (art car) serves as the DJ booth, the laser mounting point, and the heartbeat of the celebration.
  • The Corridor: The lasers will shoot straight down Market Street, acting as a glowing ceiling for the city's main artery.
  • The Intersections of History: The beams will pass directly over the iconic physical Pride flag in the Castro and point toward the glowing Pink Triangle installed on Twin Peaks, physically linking the city's monuments of pride and remembrance.

The Core Experience

The "Lights On" Moment

At golden hour on Friday, June 26th, the plaza will fill with locals and visitors. Right at sunset, a collective countdown will trigger the activation from the Awemobil. The "Gayzers" will ignite, painting the sky with Baker's colors.

The Sunset-to-Sunrise Celebration

Once the lasers are active, the event becomes an open-air, overnight celebration. The party continues through the night under the rainbow canopy, honoring the historic roots of Pride as a liberation movement, and culminating in a collective sunrise viewing over the San Francisco Bay—a symbol of a new dawn.

Amplification & PR Strategy

  • The Human Story: Pitch international media on the philosophical narrative: SF is sending a message to the world about living freely, using the city's own skyline as the canvas to celebrate all of humanity.
  • The 2028 Tease: Position this event in the press as the opening salvo for the Pride flag's impending 50th anniversary.

The "Look Up" Campaign: Encourage everyone along Market Street to share photos with hashtags like #Gayzers, #CityOfAwe, and #RainbowOfHumanity.
